Medication:No One Owes You an Explanation

Medication: No One Owes You an Explanation

I came across this quote while scrolling through social media the other day.

“I just timed a drug commercial which spent more time listing the side effects than selling the drug. Why would anyone put that in their body”

Well, sir, I’m going to have to work hard to avoid correcting all of your grammar errors.  There are more important issues to cover.

Second, OH MAN.  What a judgment to make with absolutely no context. Medications are prescribed for so, so many reasons.  It can be anything from blood pressure to cancer.  Allergies or suicidal thoughts.  Chronic pain or sleeping through the night.

No matter what the issue is, each patient has worked with a doctor or a team of doctors to find the best solution for them.  Medication is only one piece out of everything in treatment.  Sleep, exercise, therapy, surgery, diet changes, and more could be included as well.

Everyone should have the opportunity to live their best life.  This does not always mean taking medication. But for others, meds are a necessary tool.

Side effects are a scary reality of taking something.  Most likely, people have already discussed the side effects with their doctor and do not need others to start conversations about how a long list of terrible things could happen because of their medication.

  1. People do not owe you a story or explanation for the way that they take care of themselves.
  2. What works for you is not what will be the solution for someone else.

3. You are not their doctor.

Adults have free will so they can make their own choices. Unsolicited comments about said choices typically are not welcome or very considerate.
