I’ve shared before that I have lived experience with chronic mental illnesses. One of the ways that I care for my mind is by taking *psychotropic meds that are prescribed to me by my psychiatrist. I have gone through some med changes in the past 6 months and realized after one of the changes that I was talking to myself in a very negative way, saying that I shouldn’t need medication support, that I should be able to handle things on my own.
I would never say those things about my clients or allow anyone to talk to themselves in that way. Something that I love being able to do with clients is providing psychoeducation on resources that can be helpful to them. Types of medication and the process of getting connected with psychiatric care are some of the topics I cover often with clients.
If you are on psychotropic medications or thinking that they could be helpful for your mental health, be kind to yourself! Destigmatizing medications includes your self-talk too!
