I love this quote from “Sex, God, and the Conservative Church.” I have done a lot of personal work over the past several years to unlearn the messages of Purity Culture, develop the values that I want to be the basis of my relationships, and integrate my bisexual identity. My spirituality is important to me, and also was a significant factor in this internal work.
Sexuality and spirituality have also been significant components in the clinical work I have done with clients and will continue to do. This quote is exactly what I hope to embody in clinical work. I want my clients to have the space to process the values that are important to them, the messages they’ve internalized, and the ones they want to hold on to as they move forward. Unlearning Purity Culture has taught me that there are no “one-size-fits-all” values or rules for sexuality, and therapy needs to hold space for that.
